PWC and GGMC present "Son of Man"Date: March 22, 2013 Views: 334 Location: California, USA Choir type: Community Choirs
The Peninsula Women’s Chorus and Golden Gate Men’s Chorus celebrate their third collaboration with the West Coast premiere of The Son of Man, by Syrian-American composer Kareem Roustom. We present excerpts from this Middle-Eastern-infused, modern-day oratorio set to poetry of Kahlil Gibran consisting of reflections on the ministry of Christ. In a review of the 2011 world premiere, the Boston Globe said, “The music…is pitched toward the impassioned, adapting Arabic-derived scales into a rich, heavily perfumed chromaticism, affording both eerie atmosphere and high-impact drama. Moment to moment, [Roustom's] invention is prolific.”
In addition, PWC will perform “Alma Submerged,” a 2012 commission from Frank Ferko, and GGMC will give the world premieres of the newly commissioned “I Will Lift Up Mine Eyes,” by Vytautas Miškinis, and “Surge amica mea,” by Leonard Enns.
Other program highlights include “I Just Lightning” by Libby Larsen and “The Stove” by Zae Munn, performed by the PWC; a GGMC performance of “Hallowed Be Thy Name” by Anders Paulsson; and “Soneto de la Noche” by Morten Lauridsen, to be sung by the combined choirs.
