Seeking singer recruitment ideas

Our all-volunteer community chorus is comprised largely of retirees.  We have used recruitment workshops, social media and direct mailers to recruit new members with varying degress of success.  Please share your best practices for reaching new singers.   Thank you

I have had some luck with this: I Google "voice teachers" plus the name of my city. If a teacher has a web site that includes an email address, I send him or her an email of our upcoming auditions to be passed on to any interested students. I also send audition info to the vocal music departments of local music schools, if a school lists contact info for the department chair, I send the info to that person and ask that it be shared with other instructors and students. I also ask that the information be posted on their bulletin boards. Sometimes I post audition info on the bulletin boards of local music stores that offer voice lessons.

We ask potential members to fill out an application and one of the questions is how they heard about the chorale, so I have a good idea of how members find us. We used to run a classified ad in the local newspaper - at one time it was effective, but the ads no longer produce any interested candidates and they're too expensive. I've tried posting on Craig's List with no results. Our members announce auditions on Facebook, but so far, most applicants say that they either know someone in the chorale or found us in a web search.

Hi Allison,

I just formed a choral group and have tried numerous recruitment approaches including emailing flyers to the activities directors of senior centers, retirement homes, putting an article in the local paper, placing an ad on Craigslist, putting flyers everywhere including the library and Starbucks, and emailing everyone I knew.  However, one of the best recruitment methods has been to create a MeetUp group, if they have MeetUp in Tampa.

Best of luck.
