Join us for Performing Arts Summer Camp for Older Adults!  Registration is now open through July 26, 2013.

Encore Creativity for Older Adults is pleased to return to the famed Chautauqua Institution in Chautauqua, New York in collaboration with two of the nation’s premiere creative arts programs to present an innovative program for adults over the age of 55, August 25-30, 2013.  The Encore Choral, Movement and Theatre Institute is now in its sixth season at Chautauqua and is on track to exceed the very successful 2012 program, which had more than 100 older adults from across the country participating.
Encore will partner with The Dance Exchange, based near Washington, DC, and the Stagebridge Theatre of Oakland, CA to offer three concurrent performance institutes, Choral, Movement, and Theatre. Chautauqua Institution will be the premiere summer location in the U.S. where older singers, dancers and actors of all levels of experience can learn, play and perform.  The institutes will attract adult students from all over the country to learn a new art, or continue to perfect lifelong skills.
The Encore Choral Institute will bring back Encore Founder Jeanne Kelly and Dr. Barry Talley, retired Director of Musical Activities for the United State Naval Academy, to conduct the Encore Chorale. Encore Chorale is the nation’s largest choral program for older adults. Singers will begin their day with a stretch/Yoga class followed by a full choral rehearsal.   After lunch singers will choose from a vocal technique class, a choral sectional, movement or theatre class, or free time.  Another choral rehearsal will follow.   Repertoire will include spirituals, oratorio selections, songs from the American Songbook and a medley of Fiddler on the Roof.   Choral, movement and theatre participants will combine forces to present Fiddler on the Roof as the program finale.  All levels of vocal experience are welcomed.

The Encore Movement Institute with The Dance Exchange is directed by Shula Strassfeld, Resident Artist and Healthy Living Coordinator.  The program will include daily warm-up and technique classes, collaboration on ensemble work and development of solos, exploration of composition methods and practice, with a focus on individual movement vocabulary.  Incorporation of spoken word and personal story into movement will be studied.   Movement Institute participants will enjoy a performance opportunity as a culminating event of the institute.
The Encore Theatre Institute with Stagebridge Theatre will be headed up by Dr. Stuart Kandell, Director of Stagebridge, Oakland, CA and David Barnet from University of Alberta, Canada.  Students will take the stage and hear the sound of applause!   They will experience the excitement of acting, the art of storytelling, and the thrill of performance.  In the acting portion, they will work together on ten minute plays and short scenes from famous plays.   The actors will learn techniques of developing characters, expressing themselves through movement and voice and learn methods of learning lines.  In the storytelling portion, they will tell a personal or traditional story of their choice, expressing character and setting, at the same time learning to hold the audience’s attention.  The Institute culminates in a performance of short plays and stories. The Institute invites all levels from beginners to advanced.  Actors just bring the desire to create, share their talent and have a lot of fun.
Students will be given the opportunity to choose an afternoon class of voice, movement or theatre.
Program fees include all classes, materials, accommodations at the historic and grand Anhenaeum Hotel overlooking picturesque Chautauqua Lake, and all meals, whether dining in the elegant dining room or on the hotel porch.
