Mansfield University presents The Armed Man: A Mass for Peace
Date: April 12, 2013
Location: Pennsylvania, USA
Choir type: College and University Choirs
The Mansfield University Festival Chorus, under the direction of Peggy Dettwiler, will perform Karl Jenkins’, The Armed Man: A Mass for Peace, on Saturday, April 13 at 8:00 pm and Sunday, April 14 at 3 pm in Steadman Theatre. The mass, which is based upon the 15th-century tune “L’Homme Armé,” was commissioned in England for the new millennium in the year 2000. It powerfully portrays the horrors of war through the use of graphic text and full orchestra with dynamic brass and percussion effects. The words are taken from the Psalms, Revelations, Kipling, Dryden, Tennyson, and the Mass Ordinary. Jenkins also includes a Muslim Call to Prayer and a poem by a survivor of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima to reflect the multi-cultural plea for peace by all humankind. A slide presentation will accompany the performance. Mansfield alumna Sarah Best, mezzo-soprano, and Ajaaz Zainul, Muadhin, are guest soloists. This mass has been performed throughout the world to critical acclaim. Tickets are available through the university website at music.mansfield.edu or by calling 570-662-4721.
