Choral Director for Middle and Upper Schools

Abington Friends School, now in its 310th year, provides an exceptional program informed by traditional Quaker values and testimonies.  Abington Friends School is an independent, coeducational, college preparatory day school serving students from three years old through 12th grade.  It is located just outside of Philadelphia with a total enrollment of 610 students.  Rooted in Friends principles of collaborative inquiry, peaceful resolution of conflict, equality, community and integrity, AFS is an unusually vibrant and diverse learning community.  More information is available at www.abingtonfriends.net.
 
 
Position Description:
The music program is highly regarded at Abington Friends School and is an integral part of our overall school program.  The Music Department emphasizes a program rich in structured curriculum, investigative exploration, performance, visiting artists and community outreach. We are currently seeking an experienced, and energetic Middle and Upper School Choral Director with a range of skills to play an essential role in our vibrant, diverse, and collaborative learning community whose passion for teaching will encourage young singers to expand their vocal palette, explore a variety of vocal styles, and take risks. Candidates should possess excellent communication skills with colleagues, students and families, have a sense of humor and a readiness for rich engagement. This is a full-time position.
 
 
Qualifications and responsibilities for the position include:
  • The candidate will have a strong choral background with an M.M., M.M.Ed. or a Masters degree in a related field
  • He/She will have at least three years in teaching experience, and the ability to direct both middle and upper school choral ensembles
  • He/She will coach Upper School Chamber Music ensembles
  • The candidate must have a commitment to diversity work, an understanding of the importance of teacher engagement and collaboration in overall school community, and an interest in using a variety of pedagogical approaches in the classroom
  • The candidate will support the Theatre program by being Music Director for one show per year
  • Additional Responsibilities include student advising, and being a member on a grade team
