Production Editor - Alfred Music - Band/Orchestra/Percussion/Choral/Guitar

Location: Van Nuys, California, USA
Alfred Music is seeking a production editor to support our authors (composers) and arrangers.
Production Editor: School / Church Team (Band/Orchestra/Percussion/Choral/Guitar)

DEFINITION
Under direct supervision, supports the School / Church Team in a variety of editorial support functions required to produce educational music publications.

CORE DUTIES
Depending on assignment, core duties include (but are not limited to) the following:
•  Supports appropriate editors, acting as a liaison between our offices and outside authors and / or independent contractors.
•  Coordinates assignment and tracking of all product numbers and related info for editors and in-house projects.
•  Responsible for FileMaker entry and tracking of all performance titles and large projects, including print/in-stock dates, artwork approvals, and complimentary composer copies.
•  Functions as a liaison/resource for in-house departments, including Sales, Purchasing, Customer Service, Marketing, etc.
•   Arranges production of covers and front matter, sends proofs of all work to appropriate personnel and assists editors in all relevant aspects of production. Creates templated covers for new and reprinted performance music.
•   Copyedits, proofreads, assigns style sheets and / or writes copy for publications and / or promotions, and completes Product Information Sheets.
•   Proofreads and/or checks off corrections as needed on music proofs, including scores, parts, and title pages/front matter.
•  Coordinates and tracks all reprints, incorporating changes and corrections that have accumulated since prior printing, which may also include new covers; works with the print department to obtain bids for both print and audio/video product and to determine amount of time available to make changes and corrections; arranges for appropriate production personnel to make alterations within a reasonable time frame; performs correction(s) directly in the system upon receipt if publication’s files are digital.
•  Reviews printer proofs (press-ready text / approval copies, color keys, etc.) of new and reprinted product for inconsistencies against provided artwork and verifies that corrections are properly incorporated without adversely affecting other elements of the publications; documents corrections for the printers using the Blueline Checklist Form.
•  Reviews samples of reprints and new product to ensure that all corrections sent to the printer were done correctly, noting any printing errors and substance problems that may have previously eluded the printing process; notates all problems on the Approval Check Sheet, flags the item in the AS400 and files it in the correction file (or immediately corrects in system if publication files are digital); communicates any severe print problem to management.
•  Reviews new print and recorded product for packaging inconsistencies and / or problems with sound quality, as needed.
•  Assists in other areas or departments as needed.

PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS
KNOWLEDGE OF:  General musical concepts; must have formal music training, and a degree in music is desirable, adding to the ability to discern correct usage of musical symbols, and the ability to easily proofread music; excellent English skills including the ability to proofread, edit, and write copy; knowledge of printing and publishing processes is desirable.
ABILITY TO:  Be extremely detail-oriented in dealing with music, text, data entry, and other various duties; possess organizational skills necessary to complete multiple tasks at one time; type proficiently for both large projects and numerous small projects; communicate well, both written and verbally, with authors, independent contractors, other Alfred staff, etc., and receive direction from such as appropriate; operate a computer, be proficient with Microsoft Word, Excel, and database software programs. Proficiency in Finale, Adobe Creative Suite and audio editing programs is a plus. Must be able to discern electronic and written matter; position may require remaining in a stationary position for several hours at a time.

Alfred is located in Van Nuys, CA. between the 405 Frwy. and Van Nuys Airport.
