Church Choir Director Needed

POSITION TITLE:
 
Choir Director / Worship Leader (CD/WL)
 
 
GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
 
This position is responsible for providing, maintaining, and creatively growing with quality, the dynamic music ministry of Shiremanstown United Methodist Church.
 
 
GENERAL QUALIFICATIONS:
 
It is expected that the Choir Director/Worship Leader:
 
  1. Have and show evidence of a deep and abiding faith in Jesus Christ.
  2. Possess and maintain the highest of Christian moral and ethical standards.
  3. Present a clean and neat appearance at all times.
  4. Be a person who expresses him/herself in positive, affirmative, hopeful, and beneficial ways rather than through negative attitudes.
  5. Be dependable and reliable.
  6. Possess excellent communication skills, and be able to effectively interact and work in a positive manner with persons of all ages and stations in life.
  7. Be a person who is a “self-starter” and “finisher”; that is, a person who can initiate a task on his or her own and stay with the task until it is successfully completed.
  8. Be creative and flexible in the discharge of duties.
 
 
SUPERVISION:
 
The day to day supervision of the Choir Director is provided by the Pastor and Administrator.  The delineation of supervision is, but is not limited to, the following:

Pastor

Any concerns regarding worship services, choir repertoire, cantatas, visitation, prayer concerns, counseling, hospital, health concerns, request time off

Administrator

Any concerns regarding facilities, staff, finances, sales, purchases, equipment, supplies, calendar, rentals, payroll and benefits.
 
 
 
SUPERVISION EXERCISED:
 
The Choir Director shall supervise, maintain, and creatively grow the music ministry of SUMC, in accordance with the following duties and responsibilities.
 
 
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
 
  1. Lead Worship and congregational singing with joy and enthusiasm, so as to encourage involvement and participation on a deeper level.
 
  1. Develop and implement music ministries that are creative and will encourage more individuals to become involved in the music ministries of Shiremanstown United Methodist Church.
 
  1. Aid in the conceptualization, development, resources, staffing, scheduling, promotion, and implementation of creative Christian music ministries.
 
  1. Support and enhance existing music ministries and their settings.  This includes, but is not limited to, Senior Choir, Children’s Choir, Bell Choir, etc.
 
  1. Aid in the development of new Christian music ministries and settings.  This may include, but is not limited to, new vocal groups, instrumental ensembles, bell choirs, etc.
 
  1. Attend and participate in all Worship Team meetings.
 
  1. Use existing as well as new and creative ways to communicate and publicize the music opportunities within the church.
 
  1. Recommend to the Administrator if any materials, equipment, and facilities, need to be expanded or upgraded.  Aid in the development of the line items related to music ministries for the annual financial plan.
 
  1. Work effectively with the organist and persons of all ages at whatever stage of development their skill in music may be.
 
  1. Be present to direct the Senior Choir at the 10:30 worship service on Sunday mornings as well as at other special services such as Maundy Thursday, Thanksgiving Eve, Christmas Eve, etc.  On occasion may direct other choirs and/or musical ensembles as necessary.  In addition, shall coordinate the music for community outreach opportunities as requested by the Pastor.
 
  1. Consult with the Pastor on a regular basis as to liturgical and seasonal emphasis in worship, special observances, and the texts around which services are constructed.  Coordinate music so as to complement such themes and emphasis whenever possible.
 
  1. Select music for weekly 10:30 worship services.  This includes the selection and preparation of an anthem(s), special music and congregational singing as well as service music (excluding prelude, offertory, and postlude).  Information for the worship folder must  be submitted to the secretary no later than 9:00 AM on Thursday of each week
 
  1. Rehearse and direct all choirs for their participation in worship.
 
  1. In the event of illness, notify the Pastor as soon as possible and suggest an alternative to the regularly scheduled music.
 
  1. Maintain the church’s music library.
 
  1. If asked to do anything that is considered to not be the responsibility of the position or in the best interest of the Church, the matter should be immediately referred to the Administrator and/or Pastor.
 
  1. Other duties as may be periodically determined and assigned by the Pastor.
 
 
POSITION REQUIREMENTS:
 
Clearances – (Cost to be paid by S.U.M.C.)
 
  1. Must provide Shiremanstown United Methodist Church with a current satisfactory Pennsylvania State Police Background Check upon employment and thereafter when requested by Shiremanstown United Methodist Church.
 
  1. Must provide Shiremanstown United Methodist Church with a current satisfactory Pennsylvania Child Line Clearance upon employment and thereafter when requested by Shiremanstown United Methodist Church.
 
  1. Upon acceptance of this position, the employee grants permission by the employer to seek a criminal history or Childline Abuse Clearance at anytime during employment.  An unsatisfactory Pennsylvania State Police Background Check or an unsatisfactory Pennsylvania Child Line Clearance may be grounds for immediate dismissal.
 
Education:
 
1.      A minimum of a College Bachelor’s Degree in Music or equivalency in experience or ability.
 
 
 
Experience:
 
1.      Training and experience in the area of choral conducting.
 
2.      Sufficient keyboard ability to accompany the choir for the Sunday morning rehearsal, and regular rehearsals and services on an emergency basis in the absence of the organist.
 
3.      Familiarity with the range of choral music literature encompassing both the traditional and contemporary fields of composition.
 
4.      Sensitivity to the meaning, the intent, and the flow of worship in the Christian community.

  1. Must be able to physically carry out or assure the execution of all the job requirements heretofore listed.
 
  1. Must provide Shiremanstown United Methodist Church with documentation of a negative TB test upon starting the position.  (Mantoux Method) (Cost paid by S.U.M.C.)
 
CLASSIFICATION:
 
1.      This is a salaried position based on an average of  twelve (12) hours per week.
 
2.      The Choir Director shall give at least sixty (60) days advance notice in the event of termination of employment.
 
3.      From time to time this position of Choir Director may be updated, changed, revised, or eliminated; depending on the ministry of the Shiremanstown United Methodist Church.
