ROLE DESCRIPTION
Role/Title: Traditional Music Director
Role Details: A salaried, exempt, part time employee expected to work 15-20 hours each week. This position is supervised by and reports to the Worship and Adult Ministries Director.
Role Summary: Works with Senior Pastor, Worship and Adult Ministries Director, staff, ministry leaders, and others in the congregation to organize and perform church organist functions as well as direct the adult and hand bell choirs.
Qualifications: A degree in Music (Master’s preferred)
Experience in liturgical Lutheran worship
Significant accomplishment as an organist/pianist, exceptional choral and
instrumental conducting ability.
Excellent interpersonal, communicative and instructional skills
Demonstrated abilities in leadership, organization and management
Compensation: Salaried, not eligible for overtime pay
Duties:
General Responsibilities
- Builds healthy relationships to effectively recruit, enlist, develop, motivate, supervise, and appreciate gifted musicians.
- Responds to the Gospel by seeking a growing relationship with Jesus Christ through regular worship, evangelism, service, fellowship, prayer, Bible study and stewardship.
- Provides spiritual leadership for musicians, production teams, worship planning teams, and worship servants helping them to grow in their faith.
- Maintains a positive working relationship and good communication with the pastor, staff, St. Luke elders and ministry leaders.
- Keeps the traditional worship expenditures within budgetary guidelines.
- Maintains high ethical standards and adult professionalism.
Worship and Music
- Prayerfully works with the Pastor, Worship and Adult Ministries Director and planning teams in providing musical support and choral direction in a way that is spiritually transforming, is thematically integrated, flows well and contributes to the other elements of the services.
- Harmonizes choral and musical elements with Lutheran theology and has knowledge of the Lutheran liturgy and hymnody.
- Selects hymns for traditional worship.
- Works to keep all worship services spiritually invigorating and fresh by introducing engaging, transforming and transcending elements.
- Plans and leads adult choir and hand bell ensembles during scheduled rehearsals and in all worship services.
- Consistently demonstrates strong keyboard/organ functional and technical skills and knowledge.
- Alert staff regarding instrument maintenance.
- Complies with copyright regulations for all elements used in worship.
- Selects, orders, and maintains the traditional music library.
- Assist the Worship and Adult Ministries Director in locating substitute organist/pianist for all excused absences.
- Plans and provides organ music for:
- The 8:15 and 11:30 worship services each Sunday
- Wednesday evening Advent and Lenten services
- Christmas Eve services
- Holy Week services
