Director of Music

Location: San Antonio, Texas, USA
Director of Music (Part-Time / Salaried Position)
Northwood Presbyterian Church, San Antonio, TX
 
Qualifications:
The Music Director should have:
1.A degree in music (or demonstrated equivalent experience)
2.Basic skills in choral training and the selection of appropriate choral/instrumental music
3.At least one year’s experience in choral direction
4.The ability to sightread and interpret music for the choir(s)
5.Demonstrated leadership skills in the areas of recruiting and program development/administration
6.The ability to train nonprofessional singers who possess varying degrees of competence.
7.Knowledge of Reformed theology and worship
8.Interpersonal skills: the ability to work with a range of ages and personality types
 
Responsibilities:
1.Select music for the weekly anthem, introit and congregational response (from the library collection and purchases)
2.Direct the Chancel Choir, Children’s Choir and Bell Choir. This includes:
   a.Recruiting choir members
   b.Conducting a weekly rehearsal for each (see work hours below)
   c.Directing choirs on regularly scheduled services on Sunday mornings as well as Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, and Christmas Eve
3. Prepare interested choir members for participation in periodic worship experiences such as the Community Thanksgiving Service and Pentecost Service or Presbytery-wide choirs (maximum of 3 per year)
4.Oversee the music budget for Northwood Presbyterian Church
5. Supervise accompaniments for all choirs (includes organist and guest accompanists)
6. Participate in professional development opportunities as time and budget allow
7. Direct two children’s musical productions per year: a children’s Christmas Pageant in December and a children’s musical in the Spring
8. Direct and coordinate church wide musical events/performances. No more than three per year, one of which is a Christmas event called potpourri
9.Attend meetings of the church’s Worship Team and present annual budget recommendations, in consultation with team members. Worship Team meetings are quarterly face-to-face meetings with email and telephone consultations in between
10.Attend twice monthly staff meetings
11.Recruit members who have musical gifts to accompany the choir on special pieces and/or to play in worship
12.Publicize music related events by writing articles for the church newsletter and e-notes
13.Maintain the orderliness of the chancel area and choir room
 
Supervision:
The Director of Music reports to the Pastor. The Worship team serves as the Session’s supervisory body.
 
Work Hours:
The Director of Music will provide at least one rehearsal period per week for the chancel, bell, and children’s choirs. The children’s choir rehearsal is 30 minutes
on Sunday morning during the Sunday School hour. (This time is non-negotiable at this time.) Rehearsal time for the chancel and bell choir can be arranged at a time that is
mutually convenient for choir members and the director.
The Director of Music will be present at all Sunday and special worship services, committee meetings, staff meetings and special musical events referenced above.
The director will also devote time to worship planning, publicity, music selection, recruiting and program development.
 
Choir Season:
The choir(s) will take off 4 weeks during the summer (typically the month of July).
The Music Director is still responsible for providing musical support to worship services during this time.
 
Provisional Period and Review:
Upon hiring, the Music Director will be given a 90 day trial period to determine the candidate and church’s mutual compatibility.
During this 90 day period either party may choose to terminate the relationship for any reason.
After this 90 day period, the relationship between Northwood Presbyterian Church and the Music Director will be renewed annually. After 5 years it will be reviewed every two years.
 
Vacation:
After the 90 day provisional period is over, the Director of Music will be given 3 weeks of vacation per year and 1 week of vacation for professional development.
Vacation may not be taken during Lent, Easter and two weeks following Easter, Advent & Christmas,
or Pentecost. (Rare exceptions possible with the approval of the Session and Senior Minister).
Vacation must be approved 4 weeks in advance by the Pastor and Session, and the Director of Music must find a replacement to direct the choir(s) during that time.

Permanent Compensation: 12,000 - 15,000 / year depending on experience
Interim Compensation: 800-1,000 per month
