Camp Counselor

Day Camp: August 5-9, 2013, San Francisco, California
Mission:
For 30 years the San Francisco Boys Chorus has offered a summer Day Camp to its choristers 8-10 and Away Camp to its choristers ages 10 to 13 to enjoy a week of learning, growth, and discovery. The mission of the SFBC Camps is to create a safe, nurturing environment for choristers to build relationships and have fun, teach each other about teamwork, and develop their musical, vocal, and performance skills in preparation for upcoming tours and opera performances.
SUMMARY:
Counselors are the primary caregivers for each camper. The Counselor is responsible for planning, coordinating, and carrying out activities and guiding campers in their personal growth and daily living skills.
Reports to: Assistant Camp Director/Camp Director
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
1. Program Planning:
- Participate in the planning, development and implementation of program activities for campers within the camps mission: Afternoon & evening games and activities, field trips, special events.
2. Program Responsibilities:
- Assist in the direction, supervision, and organization of campers in their living unit, within activities and throughout the camp in order to meet the intended camper outcomes.
- Assure campers are properly supervised at all times.
- Be aware of and implement safety guidelines, as well as security rules and procedures. Maintain high standards of health and safety in all activities for campers and staff. Provide the daily care of each camper within your supervision, including recognition of personal health needs. Ensure that campers receive their medications as directed by the Camp Nurse.
- Participate as a member of the camp staff team to lead, assist, and supervise evening programs, special events, and other all-camp activities and camp functions.
- Actively participate in all program areas as assigned such as waterfront, all camp activities, choreography and arts and crafts as directed.
- Be a role model to campers in your attitude and behavior in regard to general camp procedures and practices including camp spirit, sanitation, promptness, and sportsmanship.
- Apply basic youth development principles in working with campers through communication, relationship development, respect for diversity, involvement, and empowerment of youth.
3. Other Job Duties:
- Contribute to verbal and written evaluations and communication as requested.
Qualifications:
- Experience working with children
- First aid and CPR certification prior to start date (SFBC will hold training for those without certification)
- Minimum age: 18 years old
- Music experience not necessary, but a plus.
- Lifeguard certification or choreography experiences a plus.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Understand the development needs of youth.
- Ability to relate to youth and adults in a positive manner.
- Demonstrate knowledge and skill in program areas and designated camp program areas.
Physical Aspects of the Job:
- Ability to communicate and work with participating groups (age and skill levels) and provide necessary instruction to campers and staff.
- Ability to observe camper behavior and assess its appropriateness, enforce appropriate safety regulations and emergency procedures, and apply appropriate behavior-management techniques.
- Physical ability to respond appropriately to situations requiring first aid. Must be able to assist campers in an emergency (fire, evacuation, illness, or injury) and possess strength and endurance required to maintain constant supervision of campers.
Away Camp counselors will reside at camp location (private school dormitory) for duration of camp and receive one day off (room & board provided). First aid and CPR training will be provided upon arrival at camp. Day Camp counselors will visit camp location daily between the hours of 7am-7pm.
Candidates may apply for both Camps or one. ALL Candidates must be fingerprinted and clear a background check before hire.
