Part-Time Organist

Location: Nashville, Tennessee, USA
St. Bartholomew’s Episcopal Church in Nashville, TN (Episcopal/Anglican) is seeking a part-time organist.  More information regarding St. B’s can be found at www.stbs.net

St. Bartholomew’s Church employs a “convergent” worship aesthetic in which a variety of musical styles are used, connecting worshipers with the larger body of Christ and its varied expressions of faith both globally and historically.  Rather than a “division of labor” model in which different instruments are restricted to different styles (e.g. organ vs. band), we strive to cultivate a “mixed chamber ensemble” style: all instrumentalists and vocalists may be used at any time in any style, depending on our needs for the day.  Thus, we are seeking an organist primarily gifted in strong, congregational leadership in hymn singing and also able to contribute as an important instrument even in contemporary selections.

Required skills:
  • Proficiency in organ and piano
  • Ability to confidently lead congregational hymn singing
  • Strong sight-reading ability
  • Ability to read contemporary charts and improvise organ accompaniment

Desired skills:
  • Experience in leading psalmody (Anglican chant, antiphonal, etc.)
  • Some choral conducting ability a plus
  • Improvisational skills

Position requirements:
  • Serve as principal organist for 2 identical Sunday worship services per week
    • 7:15 rehearsal, worship at 8:15 and 11:00
  • Serve as rehearsal accompanist for choir:
    • Sept-May: Wed, 7 – 9pm, subject to change
  • Serve as principal organist for special services:
    • Christmas Eve, Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, Easter Vigil, quarterly hymn sings (Sunday evenings)
  • Private weddings/funerals (for additional pay) or find substitute
  • Oversee the instrument at St. B’s, working with Director of Music to maintain organ & consider upgrades.
  • Provide substitutes for any missed events

Compensation: $12,000/yr
  • Benefits:  AGO membership dues, music allowance ($100), and business expense ($100)
  • Vacation:  4 weeks off, with advance notice and substitute hired.  Must be available on Christmas Eve, Palm Sunday, Easter Sunday, and Pentecost.

Desired start date: June 2013.
