What's the importance of choral activity in schools?

Hello
I'm here asking for some insights.
I'm from Brazil and, in my country, choral music is almost completely out of the education curriculum in public schools.
In order to gain more arguments to my attempts to build awareness about the subject, I'd like to ask people who work or research on the matter to say me some thoughts and facts about the importance of choral activity in schools and, maybe, introduce me some researches that could reinforce the cause.
Any ideas related to the subject could help.
Thanks,

Carlos - Chorus America has done extensive studies on the benfits of choral music in schools.   They have an entire set of resources, from talking papers to the full studies.

You might read about the Mae Carden System of Education - she talked alot about the importance of the integration of the arts with standard learning.

Ms Carden believe that music is a language and also used rhythm and pitch in teaching very young children how to read. Music and Art are an essential part of the Carden curriculum.

My early school years (2-6gr) were in a Carden School. Of course, I loved  the fact that we had music ad art every day (or so it seemed). The other parts of learning, including the great books, writing, other languages, and even math became a joy for me.

The music was the most important part! ;)
