Assistant Music Director

Location: Swarthmore, Pennsylvania, USA
Swarthmore College's Chester Children's Chorus seeks a qualified assistant music director. The assistant music director’s role is two-fold: 1. Conduct and rehearse the younger members of the chorus (Training Chorus of 30 students, Junior Choir of 20 students and Advanced Junior Choir of 15 students) throughout the school year and summer, and prepare the groups for concert performances. These rehearsals occur after school and on Saturdays. 2. Sing-to-Learn program director.  The Sing-to-Learn program reinforces classroom curriculum in all core subject areas in pre-kindergarten through second grade with fun, catchy songs. The program director works in conjunction with school administrators and teachers and is currently in three Chester Upland School District public elementary schools. This program occurs during the school day. 

Required Skills and Abilities:   

Formal training and fluency in classical choral music (baroque to modern), and folk and popular genres (gospel, R&B, jazz); ability to sing in children’s range; ability to teach rigorous sight reading; ability to impart key elements of musicianship and performance protocols; fluency in keyboard harmony; improvisational skills; sense of humor; patience and enthusiasm for working with children.

Required Credentials:
 
A Bachelor's degree in music or in music with course work in music education; a degree in music education preferred. A minimum of 3-5 years relevant experience is recommended.

For younger children, the chorus' Sing-To-Learn program provides music instruction that reinforces academic objectives in 12 kindergarten, first grade and second grade classrooms in Chester.
