Organist and Choirmaster (Part time)

Location: Southborough, Massachusetts, USA
St. Mark’s Church, an Episcopal congregation in Southborough, MA, seeks a part-time year-round organist and choirmaster .Our congregation enjoys music that lifts spirits high through familiar hymns and the discovery of new songs. We hold three services throughout the school year—two of these with music. Our largest service, geared toward families, includes both hymns accompanied by organ and two lay singers/guitarists leading the congregation in song. We also offer a traditional Holy Eucharist with hymns and an adult SATB choir.

Our congregation values great diversity in musical styles within the beauty of our traditional Episcopal service, including the hope to introduce spirituals, contemporary hymns and Taize chants. In addition, we desire the continuation and expansion of a vibrant yet small SATB choir and the addition of a children’s choir. Our new organist will embrace the opportunity to work in various musical styles to strengthen our reverent and joyful worship.

We are looking for a Part-Time Organist and Choirmaster (8-12 hours a week) to:

  • select music for our two services in consultation with the rector;
  • provide music at those two services
  • direct and accompany our adult choir;
  • provide music for our summer service
  • establish a children’s choir;
  • attend our weekly staff meeting; and
  • provide music at additional Holy Day services throughout the year.

You should:
  • play the organ with joy and passion;
  • be familiar with a liturgical church tradition (and the Episcopal liturgy as a preference);
  • have experience as an organist at a church and in leading a choir;
  • work well with others; and
  • seek to bring vibrant music to our growing community.

Annual salary is $14-16k based on experience with 4 Sundays of vacation.
