POSITION SUMMARY:
The Preparatory Chorus (Level I) Director will join the SFBC Music Faculty starting September 2013. The successful candidate is a self-directed and organized individual who is able to plan rehearsals that will achieve the goals of SFBC’s music education program.  The Preparatory Chorus is a K-1 program designed to encourage enthusiasm and appreciation for music as well as to facilitate development of the boys’ chorus readiness skills, e.g. singing in head voice, cooperation, and focus in rehearsal.   A Preparatory Chorus rehearsal will consist of music games and activities and in the spring semester, preparation of 2 or 3 unison songs for a family presentation in May or June.  Music games and songs familiar to teachers trained in the Kodály approach to music education will be used.
 
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
  1. Planning:
  • Collaborate with SFBC Music Faculty to establish goals and objectives for the Preparatory Chorus Program, consistent with SFBC Chorus expectations. 
  • Create and develop the year-long Preparatory curriculum that aligns with the SFBC mission and vision for this Level I chorus.
  1. Program Delivery:
  • Applying the abovementioned approaches, teach a once-per-week 45-minute music class for two groups of K-1 boys. Provide parents with song texts and recordings for work at home as needed.  Conduct the Preps in family presentations in May or June.
  1. Evaluation
  • Complete and ensure the timely distribution of twice-yearly chorister evaluations.
  • Contribute to final program evaluation at the end of the academic year to ensure continued effectiveness and development of the Preparatory Program.
  • Work closely with the Training Chorus Director to prepare boys for audition into the next performance group. 
4.       Administrative Responsibilities:
  • Communicate student progress and goals with parents.
  • Attend twice-annual staff professional development workshops.
  • Attend once-monthly music faculty meetings.
QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelors Degree in Music, preferably with an emphasis in education. 
  • Minimum of 3-5 years experience in a music education setting with preK-2 students. 
  • In addition to experience with the Kodály method, experience with or knowledge of a variety of music theory methods is a plus. Masters degree or Summer Certification Levels work in Kodály instruction method preferred.
  • Is a dynamic teacher who is able to engage and motivate singers to the highest standards of artistic excellence.
  • Ability to work weekdays 3:30pm to 4:45pm during the chorus year (September-June) and to work two weeks during the summer.
  • Ability to set priorities, manage multiple staff schedules, and meet deadlines.

Monday and Wednesday: 3:30-4:45pm, San Francisco
Start September 2013
 
COMPENSATION
 Commensurate with experience and qualifications.
