music for christmasDate: May 25, 2013 Views: 757
Does any christmas music exist where there are adaptations from Messiah along with contemporary christmas songs and traditional carols? Basically what I'm asking for is a mix of the old, the new and traditional, including contemporary carols like the King is born halle hallelujah, rejoice and be exceeding joy, etc. If this is available, I would be grateful if you could tell me where I can get it so that I can buy it. My church choir is about 30 member ages ranging from 10 to 50 and we sing SATB arrangement moderate level.

Hello Indira Catherine,
I'm - and perhaps others - am not quite sure what you are asking for... Is it for a piece of "Christmas music" music which contains both "adaptations from Messiah" and "contemporary christmas songs (as well as) traditional carols", or are you looking for "adaptations from Messiah" and, as well, "contemporary Christmas songs and (as well) traditional carols"? Could you tell me/us, please, what your last (family) name is? Thanks!
Thanks!

Hi Indira Catherine,
You'll definitely want to take a look at Richard Toensing's set of 24 New Orthodox Carols for the Nativity of Christ, all of which are beautiful, approachable, and varied, both in spirit and in musical idiom. Some are in the Greco-Byzantine style, some are in a pentatonic folk-like idiom, and still others are in standard Western tonality, yet all of them have a fresh twist to melody, harmony, or rhythm. They are free to use, and PDFs of each carol can be downloaded at Richard Toensing's website, http://www.richardtoensing.com/orthodox.htm
Here are three carols to listen to, which were recorded by Cappella Romana:

Feel free to contact me if you have questions about these glorious carols.

I would doubt that a single musical would combine all the styles your talking about, so why not compile a musical of your own? You can simply choose the pieces you want, and then write a narration to go between: narration that connects them together to tell the Christmas story. I really don't think it would be that hard to do. Just a thought.
