Anne Hege, a San Francisco Bay Area native, has been named the new Artistic Director of Voci Women’s Vocal Ensemble.
Fresh from Princeton University, where she will soon complete her PhD in Music Composition, Hege will take over the helm of the highly respected East Bay choral ensemble in August.
She succeeds Jude Navari, Voci’s artistic director for the past 14 years.
“We are thrilled to have Anne, “said Terry Meyers, Co-Administrative Director of Voci. “Her unique body-centered approach to conducting, her boundless creativity, and cutting-edge knowledge of music will help Voci move in interesting new directions.”
Hege currently works as a vocalist, composer, improviser, and electronic musician, performing original works in her performance duo New Prosthetics, the laptop ensemble Sideband, and for the Carrie Ahern Dance Company.
In 2000, she founded and directed the Albany Community Chorus, and she has led various sacred and secular vocal and performance ensembles in the SF Bay Area, Mexico City, New Jersey, and New York.
Born in Oakland, CA, Anne began her musical career singing with the Piedmont East Bay Children’s Choir—which just premiered one of her arrangements in June—and the Oakland Youth Chorus.
Hege received a BA in music with honors from Wesleyan University in Connecticut and an MA in Music Composition from Mills College. For her doctoral research at Princeton, she developed a body-centered theory of musical and multimedia analysis.
The 20-voice Voci Women’s Vocal Ensemble, which last year celebrated its 20th anniversary, is recognized as one of the finest choral groups in the Bay Area. The Ensemble is dedicated to musical excellence in the performance of both new and innovative music as well as treasured repertoire within the classical choral tradition. Voci champions music by and for women.
Voci was one of three women’s choirs invited to participate in the prestigious International Tapestry Festival in Vancouver, B.C. in May 2012, and the Ensemble just recently performed at Davies Hall as part of a celebration of SingersMarin’s 25th anniversary.
Voci will be holding auditions for new advanced choral singers in August. Auditions can be scheduled by contacting Anne Hege directly (firstname.lastname@example.org). Visit www.vocisings.com for further information.
