Filemaker users for choral library and a template?

Esteemed colleagues,

We desire to convert our choral music library to a DB (we have Filemaker Pro), and I was wondering if any of you have a template you can send to use to import the XLS sheet we currently use to function then as a DB.

Thanks,

D

Daniel,

Have you thought on another solution, ie not to do your own database, but just using Musica database and benefiting in it from a private field (www.musicanet.org) for managing your location? In this case, the description of the score has not to be done, and is generally much larger than what you would do yourself, thus much more possibilities in search, in display, in printing, in sorting, ... And if you fall on a title that is not referenced yet, you do it in the Musica master database, bringing by this way your stone in this collaborative worldwide project. Presently the scores' table of Musica describes 166,000 titles.

Since only you know what fields are present in your existing database, it would be difficult for someone else to create a FM template for you. The good news is that once the data is imported you will be able to tweak the fields after the fact (e.g. rename them, change their format, etc.) so you don't need to have everything perfect ahead of time. To start with, you can just create a bunch of generic fields. In fact, won't FileMaker just import the existing XLS file without creating any fields in advance? That might be the best way to start.
