DMA at Ohio State University

Hello everyone -

I've not been able to find much, or really any, discussion online about the DMA in conducting program at Ohio State University.

If you have any positive or negative comments I'd like to hear them.

If you don't want to discuss this publicly, please e-mail me if you have the time.   davidjaronowski(a)aol.com

Thank you for your feedback!

Hi Dave,
I recieved my BME from OSU in 2011. I forwarded this message along to two recent DMA's that I went to school with, and hopefully they will respond with much more indepth answers to any questions you might have.

As for what I observed from the program, The doctoral candidate usually runs the University Chorus, the entry level choir open to any student, consisting of mostly non-music majors. They also get to rehearse and conduct pieces with the Men's and Women's Glee Clubs on many concerts throughout the year. I can't really speak of their coursework or individualized training, but I've seen the results, and the last two gentlemen to recieve their DMA's are fantastic conductors.

The head of Choral Activities, Dr. Robert J. Ward is amazing. I don't think I'll ever see a conductor more meticulous with their research and score study then Dr. Ward. His rehearsals with the Men's Glee Club and Chorale run with clockwork percision down to the last second of class. His knowledge of Men's Chorus and Boy's Chorus Repitorie is vast and constantly expanding in pursuit of finding new works for his choral series through Santa Barbara Publishing. http://www.sbmp.com/ChoralSeries.php?Title=Robert%20J.%20Ward%20Choral%20Series. I stilll keep in touch with Dr. Ward, and make trips back to columbus frequently to attend concerts and stop in at rehearsals.

If you have any specific questions, I can try and track down some answers for you. Hope this at least gets you started.

I loved my time at Ohio State.  It is a great program with lots of podium time and lots of individual attention.
