Take the Latest ACDA Poll: "Smart Phones in Concert!?"

It's time to vist the ACDA website to take the poll of the week!  This week's question: "Is it acceptable for audience members to use smart devices during a concert?"

Are they mature and compassionate enough to turn the sound off and the brightness way down? Until we can count on that, the answer is no.

The fact is that audiences are going to use them if we like it or not.  Sitting up in the balcony at performances at the Dallas ACDA I saw plenty of smart phones in use down below on the main floor, so choral directors seem to be no exception to the norm.
I have seen creative approaches to inviting cell phone use; from things to scan for more information on the program notes, or to a site to purchase recordings of the choir, to concerts that ask for feedback at appropriate times via phones.
The phones are here to stay so perhaps a more practical question is: how do we teach audiences to use their phones respectfully and appropriately?

ANY phones for that matter when it comes to turning off, or down, the ringer.  I think we will see the day that many venues, even churches will have to post signs or install blocking devices.  There's a cheap attempt at a fix and a more sure, tasteful but expensive option.
