Homage a Fred Waring
Date: December 6, 2013
Location: Pennsylvania, USA
Choir type: Chamber Choirs and Vocal Ensembles
For my FB friends in northcentral PA, here is a rare opportunity to hear the music of Fred Waring's renown Pennsylvanians right here, tonight, Dec. 6th, at the Williamsport Area High School Auditorium, at 7:30. Presented by the Williamsport Chamber Choir, its Children's Choir & a 31-piece orchestra directed by Kent Weaver, the evening will be filled with classic arrangements provided by the Waring Collection at Penn State. Songs like "So In Love", "All of You", "Sentimental Journey", "Zip-a-dee-doo-dah", "Days of Wine & Roses", "The Night Before Christmas", "I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day", and many others by arrangers such as Roy Ringwald, Hawley Ades, Ken Darby, & Robert Shaw (yep, one and the same!), & Harry Simeone will be featured. These very charts were sung by the Pennsylvanians 40 to 60 years ago...and, they STILL work in 2013! Who knew? As a vocal jazzer I am thrilled to be a small part of this concert. The rich, tight harmonies & swingin' rhythms of Fred's music have energized me, and I can see how they've had an influence on vocal jazz ever since. It's about time Fred got his due... As has been said many times over the ensuing years, "he did teach much of America how to sing"!
