Lake Effect is one of two vocal jazz ensembles at the University of Minnesota-Duluth (UMD), where there are twelve thousand students enrolled in the University’s undergraduate, graduate, and professional schools. The UMD music department consists of 185 music majors and over 500 enrolled in performing ensembles. Lake Effect is an auditioned vocal jazz ensemble comprised of sixteen singers representing a variety of majors/minors and is accompanied by a four-piece rhythm section and four horns. Lake Effect maintains an active performing schedule, including campus concerts, community functions, vocal jazz festivals, and UMD athletic events. In spring 2006, Lake Effect was selected as a winner in the collegiate vocal jazz category of DownBeat magazine’s student music awards. That same year, Lake Effect was selected to perform at the Minnesota ACDA State Convention and the Minnesota MEA Conference. They also performed at the 2008 North Central ACDA Division Conference in Fargo, North Dakota. In 2010, Lake Effect released their first CD, Lake Effect Live! and represented American vocal jazz at the twenty-ninth World Conference of the International Society of Music Education in Beijing.
