I recall an episode of Garrison Keillor's "Prairie Home Companion"  where he interviewed Dawn Upshaw (world-renowned soprano).   She described being in middle-school choir, but being discouraged by her choir director, due to her "lack of singing ability."  (?!?!)
I often use this story to encourage my voice students, or choir singers, when they are about to lose heart.

Garrison also describes memories of his high school choir, and how they sang, "Give me yout tired, your poor.."

I believe that Jasmine Guy was in one of the choral and arts magnet programs here in Atlanta.

Rex Smith, singer-actor who played Frederick to Linda Ronstadt's Mabel in the Pirates of Penzance movie,  the central character in Streethawk, and I believe is still touring as Danny in Grease,  sang in my high school choir under Robert S. Lowrance.   We played opposite each other in a drama-class production of I Am a Camera - the dramatic version of
Cabaret.  (My "claim to fame" ;) Rather rebellious, Rex (called "Greg" then)  was banned by strict Mr. Lowrance from some concerts because he would not cut his shoulder-length hair.

Great article.  I really makes you think about the value of choir for sure.  Small point.  Our wonderful Canadian astronaut is Chris HADFIELD.  His music reached the universe, didn't it?
