The Virginia Choral Society is a community-based adult SATB choral group of over 100 voices that presents four major concert series each year. Established in 1931, it is one of the oldest continously-running choral organizations in the region. The chorus often performs with orchestra and expertly presents traditional choral repertoire as well as Broadway, folk, Americana, 20s and 30s nostalgia, religious and secular music for several thousand patrons annually. The VCS has recorded several albums, and sponsors scholarships for local youth interested in pursuing studies in voice and choral music. The group also organizes regular excursions overseas.
The choir is directed by Jim Powers, who is in his 18th year leading the ensemble as artistic director. Its conductor-in-residence is Justin W. Lewis.
