Tracing copyright to a book version first published in an old US magazine
Date: January 17, 2014
Would welcome any suggestions for tracing independently who--if anyone--owns the copyright to Steinbeck's first version of "The Pearl," published in Woman's Home Companion December 1945 as "The Pearl of the World" and differing in many textual details from the book as published in 1947 (which is definitely copyright to one of the heirs).
I've ordered a copy of the magazine, but even if it does not show copyright by either the author or the magazine or its publisher (now defunct), I"m not sure what that would prove--if anything . . .
So far Web search yields nothing useful.
