World Premiere of "Chapel Music" by Joseph Schwantner

On Sunday, February 9, 2014, the Alice S. Millar Religious Center and the Henry and Leigh Bienen School of Music of Northwestern University will present the world premiere of "Chapel Songs: Five 'diverse' Songs for Chorus and Orchestra " by Joseph Schwantner.
The concert takes place on Sunday, February 9, 2014, 7:00 p.m. at Alice Millar Chapel, 1870 Sheridan Road, Evanston, IL, 60208. Admission is free; - a freewill offering will be received.
"Chapel Songs" was commissioned in honor of the 50th Anniversary of Northwestern's Alice Millar Chapel and supported by the Don Mar Wee Fund and individual donors. The 25' work is scored for solo soprano, solo flute and piccolo, mixed chorus, strings, brass, harp, piano, and large percussion section that includes amplified tuned goblets. The five movements are based on texts from Psalm 149, George Herbert, San Jaun del la Cruz, Henry David Thoreau, and William Butler Yeats.
The world premiere will culminate a five-day residency of Joseph Schwantner at Northwestern University in which he will work with over 300 students and seven ensembles, give classroom presentations, and speak with community members.

This memorable concert will celebrate the 50th Anniversary of Alice Millar Chapel. The program will begin with the glorious strains of Louis Vierne’s Marche Triomphale for brass, timpani and organ. The centerpiece of this event will be the World Premiere of Chapel Music: Five 'diverse' Songs for Chorus and Orchestra by Joseph Schwantner. Mr. Schwantner displays his extraordinary imagination for musical color in this work that features mixed chorus, solo flute, brass, tuned goblets, percussion and strings. Rounding out this celebratory evening will be Schwantner’s stirring composition New Morning for the World: Daybreak of Freedom, based on texts of Martin Luther King, Jr.
