Wanted: Nordic Tenor In Boston
Date: February 14, 2014
Location: Boston, MA, Massachusetts, USA
STÄMBANDET, a Boston folk chorus specializing in Nordic music is seeking a tenor.
GENERAL INFORMATION about STÄMBANDET + STÄMBANDET's repertoire is traditional folksongs from throughout the Nordic countries -- especially Sweden, Iceland, and Norway -- sung in native languages. Most arrangements are a cappella in four to seven parts. Arrangements vary in style from folk to classical to jazz. All music is memorized for performances. +
Rehearsals are usually Sunday evenings from 7:00 to 9:30, (except in the case of Monday holidays when the rehearsal is usually moved to Monday evening). Additionally, at the start and at the midpoint of the season the group holds two weekend "rehearsal retreats" in the fall and January for intensive repertoire and ensemble work. The upcoming 2011 January retreat will be the last weekend -- the 28th to the 30th -- in Rockport. + Most members are from Scandinavia originally or have strong Scandinavian roots. Currently there are 3 Swedes, 2 Norwegians, 5 Scandinavian-Americans, and 2 Americans. Members range in age from 20 something to 60 something, with the majority in their 30s and 40s. +
Members contribute dues of between $50 - $100 about four times per year. The dues cover a portion of annual expenses. (Dues do not cover retreat meals and lodging.) A portion of annual costs are covered by concert receipts, sponsorships, and CD sales. Group expenses include concert promotion & publicity, guest instrumentalists, and director's salary. + The season roughly runs from September through May, with 8 to 12 scheduled performances. Concerts are presented in a variety of venues - concerts halls, churches, folk festivals, coffee houses, etc. Although the venues are primarily in the greater Boston area, there are occasionally concerts in Connecticut, New Hampshire, Maine, and New York. + STÄMBANDET was founded in 1978 by three Swedes. The group has two recordings and is known for excellent a cappella blend and balance. More information can be found on the website www.stambandet.org. = = = = = = = =
GUIDELINES for STÄMBANDET AUDITIONS 1) Sing a warm-up excercise covering the vocal range from lowest to highest notes. 2) Sing a prepared a cappella folk song of your choice, preferably Scandinavian. 3) Learn and sing a short song or refrain from STÄMBANDET's repertoire, and then sing it within a quartet. (NOTE: This is not a sight-reading test. Some of the group's members read well and some do not. The point of this section of the audition is to hear the blend of your voice in a quartet.) + The sung portions of the audition take approximately 20 minutes. Then we briefly talk together with you, to ask a few questions and to give you the opportunity to do the same.
