The Duke Vespers Ensemble will present a performance of Orlando di Lasso's beautifully meditative work, Lagrime di San Pietro ("The Tears of Saint Peter") with a consort of Renaissance wind instruments, including guest recorder specialists and sackbutt players from the Washington Cornett and Sackbutt Ensemble.
The Lagrime is a monumental cycle of 21 seven-voice madrigals that explore Peter's guilt and suffering after denying Christ. The poetry, by Luigi Tansillo, describes not the act of denial itself but rather the searing glance given by Christ to Peter directly after the third denial, recorded in the Gospel of Luke, as well as Peter's inner turmoil after admitting his cowardly act.
“At that moment, while he was still speaking, the cock crowed. The Lord turned and looked at Peter. Then Peter remembered the word of the Lord, how he had said to him, 'Before the cock crows today, you will deny me three times.' And he went out and wept bitterly.”
