The 2014 Oberlin Summer Conducting Institute is designed as an opportunity to give conductors at all phases of their careers the occasion to collaborate with world-class faculty on one of the great masterpieces of choral-orchestral literature. This year's institute will be devoted to an in-depth analysis, rehearsal, and performance of Joseph Haydn's monumental oratorio, The Creation. In addition, we will explore an array of elements dedicated to excellent choral performance, including gesture, working with instrumentalists and soloists, and vocal health. We will use additional works to demonstrate a variety of useful rehearsal techniques.
A unique facet of the Summer Conducting Institute is the occasion to perform the large-scale choral orchestral work being studied during the masterclass sessions. This year participants will have the opportunity to perform Joseph Haydn's Creation under the baton of Maestro John Nelson, in a collaboration between Oberlin's Credo strings program, the Oberlin Summer Festival Chorus, and members of the Cleveland Orchestra. The performance will take place in Severance Hall in Cleveland, home of the Cleveland Orchestra.
