Location: Virginia, USA
Choir type: Community Choirs
For the first time in their combined 80-year history, The Oratorio Society of Virginia and Ash Lawn Opera will collaborate to produce two performances of Leonard Bernstein's Candide on May 2 and 4, 2014 at the Paramount Theater in Charlottesville, VA. The Oratorio Society's Music Director, Michael Slon, will conduct the 85-member Oratorio Society chorus, 28-piece chamber orchestra, and principal soloists drawn from theaters across the country, in semi-staged performances directed by Andrea Dorf McGray (Washington National Opera).
Written in 1956 by the composer of West Side Story, Candide won four Tony Awards and five Drama Desk Awards at its 1974 revival. Based on the witty novella by Voltaire, this comedic and fast-paced operetta traces the travels and travails of the naive Candide, his beloved Cunegonde, and a host of colorful characters on their quest to find "the best of all possible worlds."
