Director of Traditional Music Ministries

Location: Fuquay Varina, North Carolina, USA
Fuquay-Varina United Methodist Church has a part-time opening (25 hours per week, with potential for growth into a full time position) for a Director of Traditional Music Ministries. This position will direct and oversee the areas of traditional worship music within the music ministry program, including but not limited to working with the traditional adult choir, orchestral ensemble, handbell choirs, and 11:00 am traditional worship service. In conjunction with the Director of Music Ministries, this position will have responsibility for recruitment, training and leading within assigned areas of ministry, in order to ensure that worship continues to grow in scope and excellence in harmony with the church’s vision to be a Christ-centered community that loves God, learns God, serves God and shares God. Requirements for the position include a minimum of a bachelor’s degree in music, with masters level training or equivalent experience preferred.  Previous experience in a traditional church music setting is preferred.

This position works with the Director of Music Ministries in the development of music and worship ministry for Fuquay-Varina United Methodist Church, including recruitment, training and leading within assigned areas of the music ministry, in order to ensure that worship continues to grow in scope and excellence in harmony with the church’s mission and vision.

11:00 am Traditional Worship Service Coordinator Responsibilities
  • Plan worship for the 11:00 am Traditional Worship Service on a weekly basis. This role will include choosing hymns that are seasonally and thematically appropriate, as well as familiar to and singable by the F-V UMC congregation.
  • In conjunction with the Director of Music Ministries, schedule and coordinate all groups that will participate in the 11:00 am Traditional Worship Service. Ensure that seasonally and thematically appropriate preludes, anthems, offertories and other special music are planned for the service.
  • Serve as the primary contact for the 11:00 am Traditional Worship Service, working in conjunction with the Director of Music Ministries.
  • Work alongside the Worship Planning Team to ensure that F-V UMC Worship is cohesive and relevant, striving for excellence in all things and offering a unified and meaningful message for today’s world.
 
Worship Choir Responsibilities
  • Direct the Worship Choir, F-V UMC’s Adult Choir, during weekly rehearsals and during the 11:00 am Traditional Worship Service.
  • Choose music for the choir that is appropriate to the skill level of the participants and when possible correlates to the worship theme.
  • In conjunction with the Director of Music Ministries, rehearse and prepare the choir for cantatas and other special services and events throughout the year.
  • Recruit participants to grow the program beyond its current capacity.
  • Direct ensembles that are out-growths of this program, including but not limited to Men’s Ensemble, Women’s Ensemble and other ensembles that may lead 11:00 worship in place of the Worship Choir.
  • Nurture the spiritual life of the choir members, including but not limited to rehearsal devotions and prayer time.
  • Work to build community within the choir, providing opportunities for fellowship and service both within and outside of weekly rehearsals.
  • Oversee all administrative needs of this group, including effective communication with participants and timely organization of printed music; utilize volunteers to assist with these tasks when appropriate.
  • Be available for rehearsal on Wednesdays, 7:15 – 8:45 pm, year-round.
 
 
 
Instruments of Praise Responsibilities
  • Direct the Instruments of Praise, F-V UMC’s orchestral ensemble for adults and youth.
  • Rehearse orchestral ensembles as needed for special events, including but not limited to annual cantatas.
  • Choose music for the ensemble that is appropriate to the skill level of participants and the season.
  • Schedule worship opportunities for the ensemble. When possible select music to correlate with the worship theme.
  • Recruit adult and youth participants to grow the program beyond its current capacity.
  • Oversee, support, provide resources for and direct as needed additional instrumental ensembles (i.e. Souly Brass).
  • Nurture the spiritual life of the group members, including but not limited to rehearsal devotions and prayer time.
  • Work to build community within the group, providing opportunities for fellowship and service both within and outside of weekly rehearsals.
  • Oversee all administrative needs of this group, including effective communication with participants and timely organization of printed music; utilize volunteers to assist with these tasks when appropriate.
  • Be available for rehearsal on Wednesdays, 6:15 – 7:15 pm, year-round.
 
Alleluia Ringers Responsibilities
  • Direct the Alleluia Ringers, F-V UMC’s Beginner Handbell Choir for adults and youth.
  • Recruit adult and youth participants for the choir in order to maintain a full ensemble as well as an adequate substitute base.
  • Choose music for the choir that is appropriate to the skill level of participants and the season.
  • Schedule worship opportunities for the choir. When possible select music to correlate with the worship theme.
  • Prepare the choir for participation in special events (i.e. concerts, retirement home visits, etc.).
  • Nurture the spiritual life of the choir members, including but not limited to rehearsal devotions and prayer time.
  • Work to build community within the choir, providing opportunities for fellowship and service both within and outside of weekly rehearsals.
  • Oversee all administrative needs of this group, including effective communication with participants and timely organization of printed music; utilize volunteers to assist with these tasks when appropriate.
  • Be available for rehearsal on Sundays, 3:30 – 4:30 pm, September – May.
 
 
Jubellation Responsibilities
  • Direct Jubellation, F-V UMC’s Intermediate Handbell Choir for adults.
  • Recruit adult participants for the choir in order to maintain a full ensemble as well as an adequate substitute base.
  • Choose music for the choir that is appropriate to the skill level of participants and the season.
  • Schedule worship opportunities for the choir. When possible select music to correlate with the worship theme.
  • Prepare the choir for participation in special events (i.e. concerts, retirement home visits, etc.).
  • Nurture the spiritual life of the choir members, including but not limited to rehearsal devotions and prayer time.
  • Work to build community within the choir, providing opportunities for fellowship and service both within and outside of weekly rehearsals.
  • Oversee all administrative needs of this group, including effective communication with participants and timely organization of printed music; utilize volunteers to assist with these tasks when appropriate.
  • Be available for rehearsal on Sundays, 4:30 – 5:30 pm, September – May.
 
 
Additional Responsibilities
  • Be available (with advance notice) to serve as piano accompanist for worship services and rehearsals when the regular staff accompanist is unavailable.
  • Be available (with advance notice) to serve as piano accompanist for special events in the church when the regular staff accompanist is unavailable. This includes funerals, weddings and special evening worship services.
  • Be available on Sunday mornings and at other times as needed to assist the Director of Music Ministries with responsibilities including but not limited to warm-ups, sound checks and other pre-service activities.
  • Be available (with advance notice) to fill in for the Director of Music Ministries in worship and rehearsal for vacations and other planned leave.
  • Be available to attend all necessary training sessions to become both knowledgeable and experienced as a “F-V UMC Trained Level 3 Sound Operator.”
  • Be available to attend F-V UMC Staff Meetings, weekly on Tuesdays at 9:00 am.
 
 
 
 
Essential Qualifications
  • Must have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ
  • Must have previous experience in a traditional church music setting
  • Must have knowledge and experiences encompassing a broad range of musical styles and traditions
  • Must be organized, show careful attention to details, be self-directed and a team player
  • Must be able to supervise volunteers
  • Must have outstanding verbal and written communication skills
  • Must have basic computer competency
  • Must be respectful, punctual, pleasant and courteous
 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with traditional adult choirs, handbells and orchestra
  • Piano accompanying skills
 

Education

  • Minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree in music
  • Graduate Level Training in Church Music or equivalent experience preferred
 
 
The Fuquay-Varina UMC Music Ministries Programs
TRADITIONAL CHORAL MUSIC
The Worship Choir is open to all adults who desire to lift praises to the King! The Worship Choir sings regularly for the 11:00 am worship service and rehearses on Wednesdays, 7:15—8:45 pm. New members are welcome at any time, and previous experience is not required! In addition to leading worship on Sunday mornings, the Worship Choir participates in special activities throughout the year, including cantatas, choir retreats and fellowship gatherings. Childcare is provided during all rehearsals.
The Men’s and Women’s Ensembles are short term choral opportunities, open to youth and adults. Previous experience is not required, and all are welcome to join! Each group features only three rehearsals per session—this is a great way to try out singing with a FVUMC choir without a long-term commitment!
Awake & reJoySing are acoustic ensembles that provide music on a weekly basis for the 8:00 am worship service. The groups include instrumentalists and vocalists who seek to offer praises through a contemplative style of music and worship. These are auditioned groups with occasional openings.
 
CONTEMPORARY MUSIC
The Praise Team provides music on a weekly basis for the 9:30 am contemporary worship service. The group includes band members (guitars, drums, keyboard and others) and vocalists with a heart for praise and worship. This is an auditioned group.
The Praise Choir works alongside the Praise Team to provide music for the 9:30 am contemporary worship service. This group is open to all (adults & youth)—no audition or previous experience required! The Praise Choir sings contemporary music with a live band. Additionally, the group participates in cantatas and fellowship events throughout the year. Rehearsals are Thursdays, 7:00—8:30 pm, and new members are welcome anytime!
 
INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC
The Instruments of Praise are an orchestral ensemble that regularly play for the 11:00 am worship service. The group is open to experienced youth and adult instrumentalists of any kind, and new members are always welcome. In addition to accompanying hymns during worship services, the group also participates in special events throughout the year, including cantatas and other seasonal programs.
Souly Brass is an instrumental ensemble that lives up to its name—all brass! This group is open to experienced brass instrumentalists of all kinds, and plays for worship and other special events throughout the year.
The FANFARE Handbell Choir is an advanced adult handbell choir that regularly offers music for Sunday worship services and other special events throughout the year. The group also enjoys attending annual handbell festivals and playing in the Fuquay-Varina Christmas Parade! This is an auditioned group with occasional openings. 
 
 
Jubellation is an intermediate handbell choir open to adults with some previous experience. The group participates in worship and special services throughout the year, in addition to occasionally attending handbell festivals and sharing music in the community.
The Alleluia Ringers is a handbell choir open to all adults. Previous experience and the ability to read music are NOT required! Although there is limited space for participation, new members are welcome at any time that there are openings.
 
YOUTH and CHILDREN’S MUSIC 
The Youth Choir is open to ALL 6th—12th grade youth who enjoy singing praises to the King! The choir meets on Wednesdays during the school year, 5:45—6:30 pm, and participates in worship on a regular basis.
Rebellations, The Youth Handbell Choir is open to ALL 6th—12th grade youth—previous experience and the ability to read music are not required! The choir rehearses on Wednesdays, 5:00—5:45 pm and currently has openings for additional ringers.
Pulse, The Youth Praise Team is open to 7th—12th  grade youth and provides music on a regular basis for youth gatherings, in addition to occasionally providing music for Sunday morning worship services. The group includes auditioned instrumentalists and vocalists. 
Kidz NPraise is a children's music program for ages three years old through fifth grade, that encourages KIDZ to PRAISE God through the performing arts. By crafting music, dancing, role playing, and doing what kids do naturally, interacting with one another, they learn the teachings of Jesus Christ. The excitement and energy this program provides is fully manifested when the children sing in worship and present a full-length musical! Kidz NPraise meets on Wednesdays during the school year.
 
SUPPORT MINISTRIES 
The Sound Team is a “behind the scenes” group that plays a vital role in the FVUMC Music Ministries. This group of audio equipment operators ensure that Sunday worship services and other special events can be heard clearly without distraction in our worship space. Previous experience is not required—we will train anyone who is interested in helping! 
The Visual Media Team is a “behind the scenes” group that plays a vital role at FVUMC. This group of power point and computer operators provide visual media support for Sunday worship services and other special events in the life of the church. No previous experience is required, and training is available for anyone interested in helping.
