Located in this historic, culturally rich and diverse city, Mendelssohn Club of Philadelphia is one of the oldest choruses in the US. Founded in 1874 by William Wallace Gilchrist as an eight-voice male chorus, Mendelssohn Club is considered one of Philadelphia's premier choruses and is noted for presenting the beloved masterworks along with numerous groundbreaking works, from the first US performance of Mahler's Eighth Symphony in 1912 to the highly-acclaimed Anthracite Fields with the Bang-on-a-Can All-Stars, commissioned from Julia Wolfe and performed in 2014.
Approximately 140 singers, mostly volunteer, rehearse weekly and present about six major performances per year. We often join The Philadelphia Orchestra for specific events at Christmas and at the Orchestra’s summer residence in Saratoga, NY. We are committed to advancing the choral art form by expanding our reach beyond the choral community to interdisciplinary presentations and frequent collaborations with dance companies, silent film festivals, and community events. During the 26-year tenure of Artistic Director Alan Harler, only the 12th conductor in the ensemble’s rich history, the Mendelssohn Club has commissioned over 55 new compositions.
