Job summary
The River’s Edge Arts Alliance seeks an energetic, cooperative, talented and creative Youth Chorus Director to join our established non-profit performing arts organization. This individual will lead the twenty-seven year old multi-aged River’s Edge Youth Chorus as both a director and teacher.
The candidate must be personable, well organized, energetic, be a dedicated team member with a fresh and modern, yet approachable aesthetic who has knack for working with children ages 9 – 13 with multiple skill levels. Repertoire to include classical, folk, contemporary and world music.
Summary of Essential Job Functions
  • A wide range of knowledge pertaining to choral music and vocal development in children.
  • Experience in pedagogical approaches to teaching choral music;  Kodaly experience and /or training a plus
  • Maintain and cultivate a positive working, rehearsing and performance environment for the entire group
  • Excellent communication skills with children, families and REAA staff.
  • Plan interesting and varied concert programs which will engage the performers musically and with an appropriate level of technical difficulty/challenge.
  • Plan concert repertoire which will maintain, engage, and attract an audience, and include pieces coinciding with the organization’s seasonal theme.
  • Plan and prepare for rehearsals, thinking about the teaching/learning arc towards the culminating event/performance.  As “Director-Teacher”, rehearse the group, lead by musical example, and teach concepts as necessary.
  • Be professional, passionate about music, and promote the “community” piece of the River’s Edge Arts Alliance’s mission. 
General Responsibilities:
  • Direct two concerts per year, which are combined with River’s Edge Community Band and River’s Edge Chorale
  • Be open to subsequent performance experiences in varied venues throughout the community
  • Recruit singers for the REYC program with assistance from the REAA staff.
  • Be organized and in control of immediate administrative needs of the RE Youth Chorus.
  • Communicate with and have a good working relationship with all necessary people to work through administrative tasks,  and to share ideas regarding concert repertoire with a shared community concert experience including:
    • Executive Director of the  River’s Edge Arts Alliance
    • River’s Edge Chorale Director when necessary
    • River’s Edge Community Band Director when necessary
    • REAA Program and Communications Associate
  • Work to maintain and improve musical and technical performance capabilities of the group.
  • Have an understanding of the River’s Edge Arts Alliance and its mission “to enrich lives and create community through the arts”
  • A Bachelors Degree or higher in Music, Music Education and have choral conducting experience and knowledge of repertoire appropriate for children’s voices.
