Justine Koontz

Location: Indiana, USA
Seventh generation Marylander Justine Koontz is a choral conductor and composer whose compositions and arrangements focus on choir but also include a variety of works for chamber ensembles, solo voice, and concert band.  Her
compositions have been recognized at the international level, including performances at the 2010 International Festival of Women Composers (Indiana, PA)
and the 2012 World Choir Games (Cincinnati, OH.)  Recent commissions have included the McDaniel College Choir (Dr. Margaret Boudreaux, director) and the Maryland State Boychoir (Stephen Holmes, director.)  Ms. Koontz has pursued private composition study under the tutelage of Dr. Frank Felice (Butler University) and Dr. Judah Adashi (Peabody Preparatory.)  She has also participated in masterclass settings with composers Eric Ewazen, Stephen Sametz and Chen Yi.

Ms. Koontz received her B.A. in music theory and composition with highest honors (Summa Cum Laude) at
McDaniel College in Westminster, Maryland, where she studied composition, guitar, choral conducting and
arranging, and liberal arts.  She is currently pursuing an M.M. in choral conducting and composition at Butler University in Indianapolis where she is studying with conductors Dr. Eric Stark, Dr. John Perkins and Henry Leck and composers Dr. Frank Felice and Dr. Michael Schelle.   At Butler, she is a graduate assistant to the choral department; assistant director to Butler’s top choral ensemble, the Butler Chorale; and a singer with the Indianapolis Symphonic Choir.

Ms. Koontz is an active member of ASCAP and the American Choral Directors Association. Her compositions are self-published through her
company Wild Garden Music.  She additionally teaches privately and is currently choir director at White Lick Presbyterian Church in Avon, IN.  If she had any free time, she would be enjoying knitting, reading, gardening and swimming.  As it is, her head is probably buried in a score somewhere…
