Biographical summary:
Valerie Coates has appeared in oratorio as soloist in New York with the West Village Chorale, the Brooklyn Philharmonia Chorus and Middletown City Chorus, in New Jersey with the VOICES Chorale, Choral Art Society of New Jersey,  Masterwork Chorus, Monmouth Civic Chorus and Chorus of the Communities, in Long Island with the Long Island Choral Society, and as guest soloist with the Manhattanville Community Orchestra.  Repertoire she has performed ranges from the Mozart Requiem, Bach St. John Passion, Saint-Saëns Christmas Oratorio, Vivaldi Gloria, Pergolesi Stabat Mater, and Händel's Messiah to Corigliano's Fern Hill and Mahler’s Rückertlieder.  Professional choral experience includes the New York Choral Artists, Concert Chorale of New York, Voices of Ascension and numerous Episcopal and Roman Catholic church choir positions.

Throughout the 1990s and early 2000s, Valerie Coates taught private and class voice for children, teens and adults at the Brooklyn College Preparatory Center for the Performing Arts, where she also directed a vocal ensemble.  Ms. Coates has also taught at the Music Conservatory of Westchester, the Bronx House and Greenwich House music schools.  She is a member of the New York Singing Teachers Association and currently maintains a home studio.
