Mary Lynn Doherty

Dr. Mary Lynn Morrissey-Doherty is a children’s music specialist and has taught in Iowa, Wisconsin, and Illinois at the K-12 and university levels. She received her Master of Music degree and her Ph.D. in Curriculum and Instruction in Music Education degree from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and her Bachelor of Arts degree from Luther College. Dr. Doherty is the former Director of Music Education and Associate Conductor of the Choir Academy of the Chicago Children's Choir, where her students performed with the Lyric Opera and the Chicago Symphony. Dr. Doherty’s research is on vocal health issues experienced by music teachers and she has presented her work both nationally and internationally.
As the Coordinator of Music Education at Northern Illinois University, she teaches choral and general music methods, supervises student teachers and serves as the School of Music Curriculum and Assessment Committee Chair. In addition, Dr. Doherty is a board member of both the Illinois American Choral Directors Association and the Illinois Comprehensive Musicianship through Performance Committee.
In 2008, she started the Community School of the Arts Children’s Choir at NIU. The CSA Children’s Choir has received a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts for the past three years, which has funded commissions from Tim Blickhan (2012) and Lee Kesselman (2013) as well as residencies with conductors Emily Ellsworth (2012) , Lee Kesselman (2013) and Nick Page (2014).
