Mary Kay Geston

Dr. Mary Kay Geston is the artistic director and conductor of Great River Chorale, a fifty-voice community choir based in St. Cloud, Minnesota. Previously she was associate professor of music at Northwestern College, St. Paul, Minnesota (1999-2011; 2012-13), where she conducted the Women’s Chorale and Chamber Singers and taught conducting, choral methods, class and applied voice, and supervised student teachers. She served as visiting associate professor of choral studies at the University of Colorado, Boulder (2011-12), where she conducted the graduate choral ensemble and taught graduate and undergraduate choral conducting. In spring 2008 she conducted the St. Olaf College Manitou Singers, and was director of choral activities at Northern State University in Aberdeen, South Dakota (1995-99). Geston received a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in choral conducting and literature from University of Colorado, a Master of Music degree in choral conducting from University of Minnesota, and teaching certification and a Bachelor of Arts degree in vocal performance from North Dakota State University. 
 
In May 2012 Geston was a guest conductor at National Taiwan University and Kaohsiung Medical University in Taiwan, and in 2010 she was a guest conductor for the Korea International Choral Association in Daegu, South Korea. She has conducted All State, honor, and festival choirs in Kentucky, Colorado, Minnesota, Wisconsin, South Dakota, and North Dakota. Choirs under her direction have performed at state and divisional ACDA and MEA conferences in 2010, 2006, 2004, 2001, and 1999. In 2003 the NWC Women's Chorale performed with the Minnesota Orchestra and maestro Edo de Waart.
 
Geston was named the 2012 Minnesota Choral Conductor of the Year by ACDA of Minnesota and has been a featured presenter at professional conferences including the 2011 Minnesota MEA Mid-Winter Conference, Northwestern College 2011 Scholarship Symposium, 2010 Iowa Choral Directors Association Summer Symposium, 2010 North Dakota ACDA conference, 2009 South Dakota MEA Conference, 2008 American Guild of Organists national conference, 2008 North Central ACDA conference, and a seminar on Hugo Distler at Luther Seminary. Additionally, she was a panelist at the 2006 National Association of Teachers of Singing national conference.
 
Geston is a member of ACDA, NfAME, MMEA, NCCO, NATS, and IFCM, and has served North Central ACDA as president-elect and as a member of the editorial board for Melisma. She was president, membership chair, Repertoire & Standards Chair for College and University, 50th Anniversary Committee chair, and a member of the F. Melius Christiansen Endowment Fund committee for ACDA of Minnesota. She is writing a biography about  American choral conductor and composer Dale Warland and a history of the Dale Warland Singers.
