Laura Collins

Location: Oklahoma, USA
Laura is a vocal music teacher at Hoover Elementary School, Tulsa Public Schools and has served the district as an elementary music specialist for 31 years.  Laura conducts an after school choral program for interested singers ages 8 and up at Hoover.  The program  includes a training chorus, concert chorus and a Circle the State With Song choral ensemble. This is the chorus program's 17th year.  Laura serves as vocal soloist and hymn leader for the First Church of Christ Scientist inTulsa. She also maintains a music studio teaching voice and piano students of all ages.  Laura has composed several pieces of music and enjoys arranging music for choral use.  She has Level III certification in Kodaly Music Education from the University of Oklahoma as well as Primary School certification for Yamaha Music Schools of America, through Yamaha International Corporation.  An active member of OMEA and former member of OCDA and MTNA, Laura has been involved for the past 31 years as an NEA/OEA member where she served for six years on the executive board of Tulsa Classroom Teachers Association and served Tulsa and Oklahoma teachers as a delegate to both state and national assemblies.  Laura currently is a Democratic precinct officer and Tulsa delegate to the state convention. Determined to see music in Tulsa and Oklahoma remain as a vital and prominent subject in the curriculum for our school children, Laura advocates strongly in this regard.  Laura chooses to be a political activist mainly in matters of human rights and civic issues, including her support of public education and the rights of children, their healthcare and general well-being.  Honors include:  Who's Who Among America's Teachers,  Who's Who in American Education, and Who's Who of American Women
