Laura Collins

Location: Oklahoma, USA
Laura serves as Soprano Soloist and Hymn Leader for the First Church of Christ, Scientist of Tulsa. Laura is the Vocal Music Instructor at Hoover Elementary School, Tulsa Public Schools and has served the district as a music specialist for 34 years.  Laura conducts an after school choral program for interested singers ages 8 and up at Hoover. In its 20th year, the chorus program includes Roundelay, a training chorus, Cantabile, the core concert chorus and several advanced choral ensembles which participate in local and state sponsored festivals and clinics, such as "Circle the State With Song" and state, district and area honor choruses.  Laura is the originating developer and chair of the Tulsa Public Schools 5th and 6th Grade All-District Chorus and continues to serve as chair since it began in 2012.  This chorus is for highly motivated young singers who learn challenging music and perform under the direction of an noted youth chorus guest clinician.  Laura  maintains a music studio teaching voice and piano students of all ages.   She has attained Level III Certification in Kodaly Music Concept from the University of Oklahoma,  as well as being certified and having served as a Yamaha Primary Course and Piano Class instructor  for Yamaha Music Schools of America, Yamaha International Corporation.  Laura has composed several pieces of music for both solo and choral voices, and enjoys arranging folk music for choral use. Laura has worked as accompanist to the Children's and Youth Choirs of All Souls Unitarian Church of Tulsa and Children's Chapel pianist.  Laura was organist at Hillcrest Hospital Chapel for Sunday services from 2000-2011. An active member of NAfME and OMEA, as well as former member of OCDA, NATS and MTNA,  Laura serves as delegate to the Tulsa Classroom Teachers Association and has been a member of Oklahoma Education Association and the National Education Association since 1980.  Laura has served two terms on the executive board of Tulsa Classroom Teachers Association and as a TCTA delegate to OEA for two terms.  She also represented Tulsa and Oklahoma at the NEA Representative Assembly in the years 2008, 2009, 2010, and in 2012.  Laura served as Democratic precinct officer and Tulsa County delegate to the Oklahoma Democratic Convention in 2014.  A political acitivist,  Laura is determined to see music in Tulsa and Oklahoma remain as a vital and prominent subject in the curriculum for school children.  Advocating strongly in this regard, Laura  chooses to plan an active role supporting in matters of human rights and civic issues, including her support of public education and the rights of children for their healthcare and general well-being. Laura also has a high interest in the safety of our food supply.  Laura supports the functional medicine movement, nutrition education and the consumption of fresh, organic, whole foods.  Laura feels we should be avoiding foods that are highly processed, genetically altered and laden with sugars and other chemical additives.      Honors include:  Who's Who Among America's Teachers,  Who's Who in American Education, and Who's Who of American Women
