Laura Collins

Location: Oklahoma, USA
Laura serves as Soprano Soloist and Hymn Leader for the First Church of Christ, Scientist of Tulsa,since 2011.  Laura is the Vocal Music Instructor at Hoover Elementary School, Tulsa Public Schools and has served the district as a vocal music specialist for 35 years.  Laura conducts an after school choral program for interested singers ages 8 and up at Hoover Elementary. In its 23rd year under Laura's direction, the chorus program includes Roundelay, a training chorus, Cantabile, the core concert chorus and several advanced choral ensembles which participate in local, regional and state sponsored choral activities, such as Tulsa Public Schools choral festivals, as well as area and state level honor choruses.  Laura is the originating developer and chair of the Tulsa Public Schools 5th and 6th Grade All-District Chorus and continues to serve as chair since it began in 2012.  This chorus is for highly motivated young singers who learn challenging music and perform under the direction of  noted youth chorus guest clinicians.  Laura  maintains a private music studio teaching voice and piano students of all ages.  Several of Laura's students over the years have been accepted into OMEA - All-State Children's Chorus,  received Outstanding ratings at contest, and regularly perform in their school choruses, musical productions and church choirs. Most recently(2015) students of Hoover school choral program were invited to sing in a local youth chorus workshop at Holland Hall School sponsored by Tulsa Oratorio Chorus, under the direction of Bob Chilcott. Laura's piano students are encourage to compose.  Several have won prizes and honorable mention for their compostitions for piano.  Laura has attained Level III National Certification in Kodaly Music Concept from the University of Oklahoma, as well as being accredited and having served as a Yamaha Primary Course and Piano Class Instructor  for Yamaha Music Schools of America, Yamaha International Corporation.  Laura has composed music for both solo and choral voices and particularly enjoys arranging folk and other traditional music for choral use. Laura has worked for many years as a pianist/accompanist for soloists and choruses, including serving the Children's and Youth Choirs of All Souls Unitarian Church of Tulsa and the All Souls Children's Chapel.  Laura was organist at Hillcrest Hospital Chapel for Sunday services from 2000-201 and a regular Sunday organ substitute in several Tulsa area churches. An active member of NAfME and OMEA and past member of OCDA, NATS and MTNA,  Laura serves as delegate to the Tulsa Classroom Teachers Association and has been a member of Oklahoma Education Association and the National Education Association since 1980.  Laura served two terms on the executive board of Tulsa Classroom Teachers Association and TCTA delegate to OEA. She represented local and state public school teachers at the NEA Representative Assembly in the years 2008, 2009, 2010, and in 2012.  Laura is a formner Democratic precinct officer and Tulsa County delegate to the Oklahoma Democratic Convention (2014).  A political acitivist since age 18,  Laura is determined to see music in Tulsa and Oklahoma remain as a vital and prominent subject in the curriculum for school children.  Advocating strongly in this regard, Laura chooses an active role supporting in matters of human rights and civic issues including her support of public education, civil rights and justice(BlackLivesMatter) and the rights of children for their healthcare, education and general well-being. Laura also has a high interest in the safety of our food supply.  Laura supports the functional medicine movement, truth in nutrition education and the labeling and consumption of our foods -- stressing the importance of buying fresh, organic, whole foods.  Laura feels we should be avoiding foods that are highly processed, genetically altered ,laden with sugars and other chemical additives and produced by large corporate food processors.  Honors include:  Who's Who Among America's Teachers,  Who's Who in American Education, and Who's Who of American Women
