LEARNING FROM THE WORLD'S GREAT MUSICIANS
Inspiring masterclasses given by musicians like Maxim Vengerov, András Schiff, Steven Isserlis, Bernard Haitink, Håkan Hardenberger, Stephen Kovacevich, Yuri Bashmet, Thomas Quasthoff and many others have been specially filmed by the Masterclass Media Foundation, a not- for-profit organisation which is creating a unique archive.
We have just released a new choral conducting masterclass - Simon Carrington working with four young conductors on choruses from Handel's MESSIAH.
DVDs can be purchased via www.masterclassfoundation.org
The Foundation films and records world-class musicians giving masterclasses and teaching students, or discussing and analysing and demonstrating their own approach to the performance of works with which they are associated. The short term aim of the Foundation is to build, over five years, a library of a minimum of 100 hours of material, although a larger number is likely. The range of teaching will not be restricted to solo instruments, but will include singing and chamber music as well as conducting and composing.
The Foundation is a non profit organisation registered in England as a charity.
Contacts with most of the major music colleges in the UK have made it clear how little of this sort of material is available, and how great a need there is for it. Many colleges have shown great interest in participating in the Foundation's work. As well as creating formal links with many of these colleges and conservatoires, the Foundation has created links with organisations such as The Wigmore Hall, The International Musicians' Seminar at Prussia Cove, The Verbier Festival and Academy and many others. A large number of great musicians already give classes at colleges, seminars, summer schools and other institutions. These important and often unique events generally go unrecorded and are lost for ever to a wider audience. It is the Foundation's aim to film and record many of these as well as to arrange events specifically for filming.
