A native of southeastern Minnesota, Thomas Hassig is now in his 26th year at Prior Lake High School in Savage, Minnesota, where he is music department chairperson and director of the Varsity Men's Choir, Women's Chorale, Choralaires, Concert Choir, and several small select ensembles. Prior to assuming his teaching duties with the Prior Lake-Savage schools he gained valuable experience teaching at public schools in South Dakota and Iowa.
Hassig was the 2010 ACDA-MN Director of the Year, the 2004 Minnesota Music Educators Association Music Educator of the Year, a 2006 state finalist for Minnesota Teacher of the Year, and in 2010 received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Prior Lake Patrons of the Arts and Activities. He is a recipient of the ISD 719 Secondary Teacher of Excellence Award, and has also been recognized as PLHS Outstanding Advisor of the Year. Hassig is a member of MENC, MMEA, ACDA, ACDA-MN, NEA, and Education Minnesota. He is past state secretary and is now President of ACDA-MN; he also serves on their FMC Endowment Committee as Recording Secretary. For eleven years he coordinated the annual ACDA-MN Men's/Women's Choral Festival involving approximately 1,000 singers from over 50 high schools and a dozen colleges. For many years, Tom was the Missota Conference Coordinator of Music Festivals; he was also music representative for Region 6AA of the Minnesota State High School League. In 2004, the Prior Lake-Savage district was recognized by the American Music Council as one of the 100 best communities in the nation for music education.
