John Ward

Location: Minnesota, USA
As an amateur pianist, singer, and composer, I've been involved with music pretty well all my life.  I grew up surrounded by the folk music and rock-and-roll of the 50s and 60s, Mom's golden oldies on the record player, Dad's classical music on the radio, and Grandma's sheet music from 1890s to 1930s.
I've enjoyed singing with a number of church and community choirs, and for the last few years have sung with the Southwest Minnesota State University Concert Choir (as "old guy singing baritone") and the SMSU Men's Glee Club (as one of many "old guys singing baritone").
Lately I've become involved in composing / arranging, mostly for the benefit of the SMSU choirs.  Where copyright permits, I'm happy to share for minimal remuneration.  See my website for details.  Complete review copies and some Finale-generated audio files are available.
Many of these are also available through the JWPepper MyScore program at
Performed by the SMSU Concert Choir:
  • Bread Soup (2009), on a text by Bill Holm.
  • Letting Go of What Cannot Be Held Back (2009), on a text by Bill Holm.
(Note: The Bill Holm pieces are available free of charge to interested Minnesota choirs.  I can't post sample copies for copyright reasons.  Contact me.)
Performed by the SMSU Men's Glee Club:
  • To the Ladies (2011), settings of three poems by British authors: No Platonic Love, by William Cartwright; Let the Toast Pass, by Richard Brinsley Sheridan; and Jenny Kiss'd Me, by Leigh Hunt.  The Cartwright is challenging, but the other two are fun and not too tough.  [TBB a cappella; optional accomp. for Let the Toast Pass]
  • Precious Lord, Take My Hand (2008), arrangement of the Thomas Dorsey hymn.  [TTBB a cappella]  [Print copies only.]
  • The Hunting Song (2008), arrangement of Tom Lehrer's classic send-up of the indiscriminant hunter.  [Not currently available]
Premiered in June, 2012 by "Doin' It Justice" of Chico, CA:
  • Hard Times, Come Again No More (2008), an SATB setting of the Stephen Foster song, a cappella with flute or oboe obbligatto.
Awaiting June, 2013 premiere by the Chippewa Falls HS Varsity Women's Chorus:
  • Hidden Love (2012), a setting of the Sara Teasdale poem, commissioned for the choir by their director, Derrick Tilus.
Music seeking premieres:
  • A Ballad of Two Knights (2012), SSA with piano accomp., on a Sara Teasdale text.
  • A Winter Ride (2012), SSA with piano accomp., on an Amy Lowell text.  SATB version coming soon.
  • A Prayer of Dedication, (2011), SATB setting of the "Prayer of St. Francis".  [SATB, accomp.]
