Gary Hammond

Location: Montana, USA
BIO: 32 year music teaching career: first 10 years teaching both bands and choirs; last 22 years teaching only choral music and English, ending up at Vista HS in Vista, CA (northern San Diego County). Along the way I taught private trumpet lessons for 10 years, then another 10 years as a private voice teacher after I switched over to teaching only choral music. I sang the baritone/bass oratorial roles for about 25 years in north SD county for two JCs and several large churches. Began experimenting with how to make rehearsal aids in the early '80s when MIDI was brand new. By 1985 I began making rehearsal tapes (cassette) for all my choirs. By 1990 the word was out our and catalog of 50 choral major works expanded quickly to 100. I shut down my voice teaching studio and began advertising Hammond Music Service Songlearning Tapes in the ACDA Journal in December of 1990, as the side business needed my full attention after school hours and weekends. In 1994 I took early retirement from teaching to devote full time to Hammond Music Service. I converted from cassette tapes to CDs in 2000, and from CDs to MP3 downloads in 2010 (coming attraction!), at which time our online catalog has grown to almost 600 choral major works and significant octavos. My son, Matthew, In Texas, handles the sales from our website ( while I concentrate on groups of octavos for all-state and regional choirs, university and college choirs, church and community choirs, etc. As of the writing of this bio (12-4-10) we are about to convert from offering CDs to MP3 downloads, while lowering prices significantly, similar to the way music downloads are offered on iTunes and I am enjoying serving my art in a new way, making quality rehearsal aids for choirs all around the world. I am also currently enjoying being the Interim Conductor of the Bozeman Symphonic Choir, an 80 voice auditioned choir serving the Gallatin Valley in SW Montana (population around 100,000). We sing four concerts of the major choral works with the Symphony in December and April.
