Steven Russell is the Director of Sacred Music at the Parish of St. Thomas More in Manalapan, New Jersey. He was the Artistic Director of the New Jersey Gay Men's Chorus for 12 years, and the Director of the Rutgers University Queens Chorale for 14. He has also been the Artistic Director of the Shrewsbury Chorale and Assistant Director of the Monmouth Civic Chorus. He has studied conducting with Richard Westenburg at Rutgers University where he received his Master of Music in Choral Conducting degree, and Frauke Hasemann at Westminster Choir College, where he received his Bachelor of Music in Music Education degree. He has sung with Joseph Flummerfelt and the Westminster Choir, and Paul J. Christiansen and the Concordia Choir. Steven has been the Chair of the Repertoire and Standards Committee for Community Choruses for the Eastern Division of ACDA and for New Jersey, and is the former (founding) President of the New Jersey Choral Consortium. He is a member of Chorus America, is on the board of the Monmouth Chapter of AGO, and a member of the National Association of Pastoral Musicians.
Steven is a certified teacher of Dharma Yoga (DYRT). He has given yoga workshops for conductors with the ACDA Student Chapter at Long Island University – CW Post, and Millersville University. He has given yoga workshops for singers with the voice students of Millersville University, and the New Jersey Youth Chorus. He has led Yoga for Singers and Conductors for the Eastern Division of ACDA in Lexington, MA and Hightstown, NJ, at the ACDA Eastern Division 2012 Conference in Providence, RI, at the GALA Choruses International Festival 2012 in Denver, CO, at the ACDA 2013 National Conference in Dallas, and at the ACDA Eastern Division 2014 Conference in Baltimore.
