A native of Red Bank, NJ; tenor/conductor Dr. Lynn Gary Atkins, Jr. is steadily building a reputation of musical success in the classroom as well as the concert hall.
Lynn has sung as a soloist with the Central Virignia Masterworks Chorale (VA), Chester Community Chorus (VA), Delaware Valley Orchestra (PA), Petersburg Symphony (VA), Princeton Pro Musica (NJ), and Swarthmore Chorale (PA). Dr. Atkins as also performed on stage in choirs with the New York Philharmonic (Colin Davis, Charles Dutoit, Lorrin Mazzel), New Jersey Symphony (Zendeck Maccal) and the Royal Philharmonic Concert Orchestra (George Daugherty) and in choirs for Julie Andrews, Sarah Brightman, Charlotte Church, Linda Eder, Denyce Graves, Patti LaBelle, and Christopher Plummer. In addition to this, Lynn has sung recitals and concerts for public and private venues.
Dr. Atkins started his teaching career in the Ewing Township Public Schools (NJ). After his graduate studies, he taught on the Southern Campus of the Shenandoah County Public Schools (VA) as well as Teacher of Choral Music at Byrd Middle School and Moody Middle School in the Henrico County Public Schools (VA). Lynn also used his choral training skills as Interim Director of Richmond Women’s Chorus, Assistant Minister of Music for Covenant Presbyterian Church; Trenton, NJ and as Director of Music at Elkton United Methodist Church; Elkton, VA. Choirs under the direction of Maestro Atkins have toured up and down the US East Coast.
Lynn is a product of The Visual and Performing Arts Academy of Red Bank Regional High School. Upon graduation, he attended Westminster Choir College of Rider University, where he received a Bachelors Degree in Music Education in 2004. Dr. Atkins is also a member of the first class to receive the dual Masters/Doctorate of Musical Arts degree in Choral Conducting from James Madison University; where he was inducted into Pi Kappa Lambda: the National Music Honor Society in 2012. Lynn has studied voice with Rochelle Ellis, Faith Esham, Dari Franks, Carrie Stevens and Kris Zook. He has studied Conducting with James Jordan, Jo-Anne van der Vat-Chromy, and Patrick Walders.
When not in front of Honors Choirs or teaching workshops, Dr. Atkins serves as Artistic Director of One Voice Chorus, a community choir organization in Richmond, VA with a 150 voice choir and 35 voice chamber choir dedicated to "...singing the beauty and power of diversity." He is also Director of Choral Music at Collegiate School, a private school in Richmond where he teaches choral music to students in grades 5-12.
