Hildigunnur Runarsdottir

Hildigunnur Runarsdottircomposer (choral and vocal music specialty), soprano, teacher (aural training and Writing for the Voice, Iceland Academy of the Arts) Hildigunnur Rúnarsdóttir was born in Reykjavík in 1964. She studied in the Reykjavík Conservatory of Music, department of Theory and Composition and graduated in 1989. Her teachers there were Thorkell Sigurbjörnsson and Atli Heimir Sveinsson. From 1989 to 1992, she studied composition in Hamburg, with Professor Günter Friedrichs, and Copenhagen, with Svend Hvidtfelt Nielsen. Among her compositions are John and the golden goose, a children's opera, A Dance Cocktail, for small orchestra, a Concerto for Organ, Strings and Percussion, Mass for choir, 4 soloists and orchestra, The Evening, for soprano and chamber orchestra and quite a few songs and choral works. In the years 1994 and 1997 her pieces, Syngur sumarregn and Andvökunótt, were chosen to be on the official CD’s from the choral festival Europa Cantat. Rúnarsdóttir was recently in the Czech Republic for a premiére of her piece, 5 Birds, for soprano and chamber group, commissioned by Czech group Musica ad Gaudium. Syngur sumarregn (The Summer Rain Sings) is written for the composer’s sister, as a graduation present, premiered by her and the Hamrahlíð School Choir, spring 1994
