Gregory Cleveland

Location: Michigan, USA
Gregory ClevelandGreg Cleveland has taught vocal music at WLW for 20 years now. Previously he taught at Clawson HS and in Japan, where he met his wife. Yes, they still speak Japanese to each every day. A graduate of Seattle Pacific University, Mr. Cleveland majored in Music Education and also in Music Theory and Literature. Mr. Cleveland also has a Masters Degree in Vocal Music Education from Eastern Michigan University, studying with Emily Lowe and Leonard Riccinto. During his time at Walled Lake Western the choirs have toured and performed numerous times in Chicago, Toronto and New York City. The choirs just returned from their 6th choir abroad, a tour of Italy: Venice, Florence, Assisi, Orvieto, Rome and Sorrento. They have performed and toured in locations in Scotland, Wales, England, Italy, Germany and Austria. In April of 2004, they traveled again to Italy and performed at the Verona International Choral Festival where they won the overall First Place Trophy for the entire festival. Celebrations took place on both sides of the Atlantic! In 2010, the Acappella Touring Choir will travel to Austria and the Czech Republic for a 12 day, 9 concert tour. In moments of spare time Mr. Cleveland likes to travel and see the world, eat most anything Asian, lift weights, and do a bit of DIY. Early music and Broadway are both passions of Greg's, even though in his practical, daily choirs, he's much more well rounded in his musical styles. Walled Lake Western Choirs: Mission The choral program strives to provide a place where music skills can be learned and immediately put into practice; where the individual vocal gifts can be developed and understood while developing an appreciation for the body of literature in the choral repertoire. Auxiliary benefits include learning to work as a team and insight into a history that the musical experience can uniquely provide. GOALS The choral program strives to: * Perform quality choral literature at the highest possible level. * Develop musical literacy and fluency in melody, harmony, rhythm, dynamics, articulation, phrasing, and tone color. * Apply literacy and technique to musical insight, interpretation and style. * Foster aesthetic development and appreciation of music as an art form. * Develop a professional atmosphere through maximum time efficiency and focus in rehearsal and other settings. * Continue the tradition of excellence that has been a part of Western choir down through the years, established by the many fine alumns who have gone on before us. * Appropriately represent Walled Lake Western High School and the community.
