San Francisco Girls Chorus returns to Davies Symphony Hall for its beloved annual holiday concert. A longstanding tradition in the Bay Area’s holiday concert schedule, the program will build on the success of last year’s multi-cultural theme with a variety of traditional and holiday music from around the world. Hundreds of choristers from across six Chorus School levels, SFGC’s Premier Ensemble and Alumnae will share the stage with world renowned special guest artists, Kronos Quartet, as well as San Francisco-based women’s chorus, Musae.
Shining a light on cultures and holiday traditions from a multitude of countries, SFGC and Artistic Director Valerie Sainte-Agathe will present music from the United States, Czech Republic, Serbia, Nigeria, Palestine and Nigeria, as well as traditional Christmas carols and Jewish folksongs. Now in its 40th season, SFGC has been a champion of the music of our time and was recently recognized for its continued dedication to presenting contemporary music with a fourth ASCAP/Chorus America Award for Adventurous Programming. Kronos Quartet join SFGC for a selection of contemporary works including the West Coast Premiere of Michael Gordon’s Exalted (2010) for chorus, string quartet and electronics. A reflective work inspired by both the events of 9/11 and Gordon’s Jewish faith, Exalted uses the text of the Mourner’s Kaddish, one of the central prayers in Jewish liturgy. SFGC and Kronos team up for further works including Aleksandra Vrebalov’s Supratext, which received its World Premiere at the 2018 Kronos Festival, and Stacey Garrop’s Glorious Mahalia, originally a string quartet work written for Kronos in 2017 and arranged for this performance to feature SFGC. A selection of works by Indian-American composer Reena Esmail also feature including Still I Rise, Tarekita and Tuttarana.
