Credo Choir, a Dallas-based adult choir, will present Karl Jenkins’ “The Armed Man: A Mass for Peace” on Sunday, May 1, 2016 at 7:00 p.m. at St. Stephen Presbyterian Church (2700 McPherson Avenue, Fort Worth, TX 76109).
A chamber orchestra, comprised mostly of Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra players, will accompany the choir. Joining Credo is the Lone Star Youth Chorale, founded and conducted by Dinah Menger.
“The Armed Man: A Mass for Peace” was initially inspired by the conflict in Kosovo, but the clear message of hope resounds even stronger in today’s political climate. The work is essentially an anti-war composition using a framework provided by the traditional Catholic Mass. Additional texts include the fifteenth-century French folk song L’Homme arme, the Islamic Call to Prayer Adhaan – chanted by 19-year old university student, Mouadh Ayachi – and excerpts from the Mahabharata and various texts by Rudyard Kipling, Alfred Lord Tennyson and Sankichi Toge. For both these performances, a Jewish call to unity, sung in Hebrew, will be added.
Dr. Jonathan Palant, Credo’s founder and conductor, remarks, “With these performances, Credo demonstrates music’s ability to unite individuals of, among other things, varying cultures, religions, backgrounds, and political beliefs. This mass is a call for peace—a call we hope all Christians, Jews, and Muslims alike will answer.”
