Quoddy Voices, way-Down-East Maine’s community chorus, will present its winter concerts on Friday, December 14 at 7 pm and Sunday, December 16 at 3 pm at the Eastport Arts Center. The theme of this season’s program is A Glorious Nowell!
The choir’s featured work is Antonio Vivaldi’s Gloria, a classic of the Baroque era. This twelve movement work will feature five soloists from the chorus, with chamber orchestra accompaniment.
The program includes other works that celebrate some important themes and the spirit of the Christmas season. Two pieces from the early 15th century, There Is No Rose and Nowell! Out of Your Sleep Arise; these are among the earliest extant vocal works that use English lyrics.
A Spotless Rose, Herbert Howells’ setting of 14th century lyrics, will feature Ray Fluke as tenor soloist. Other seasonal selections include Anton Bruckner’s dramatic Virga Jesse Floruit and a reflective Noel by music director John Newell.
Quoddy Voices is a constituent group of the Eastport Arts Center, with dedicated members who hail from all over our region to make music together. John Newell directs the ensemble and Lee Downing is the piano accompanist.
Suggested donation for the concert is $12; students under the age of 18 will be admitted free. The Eastport Arts Center is at 36 Washington Street, Eastport, and at www.eastportartscenter.org, and is handicapped-accessible.
