Music for All announced today that Dr. Jo-Michael Scheibe will preside over “The Joseph Flummerfelt Conductor’s Critique” during the 2020 National Choir Festival.
Dr. Flummerfelt’s encouragement for the development of the National Choir Festival was enormous. He was instrumental in establishing the standards for providing affirming feedback through one-to-one conversations with each director. In the inaugural Music for All National Choir Festival, “The Joseph Flummerfelt Conductor’s Critique” became a positively life-changing experience for scholastic choral directors.
To honor this legacy, “The Joseph Flummerfelt Conductor’s Critique” will be presided by an esteemed choral conductor each year during the National Choir Festival. Music for All is honored to have Dr. Jo-Michael Scheibe serve during the 2020 National Choir Festival. Dr. Scheibe is the chair of the Thornton School of Music’s department of Choral and Sacred Music at the University of Southern California.
Past conductors who have served in this role include in 2019, Dr. Hilary Apfelstadt, Professor Emerita of Choral Studies at the University of Toronto where she held the Elmer Iseler Chair in conducting, and in 2018, Dr. Joseph Flummerfelt, who premiered the position with grace and honesty. From the wisdom of a lifetime he wrote,
“The thing that is going to make an impact is if these young people experience art. Those things that really take human beings to a deeper place within themselves are the things that change lives.” -Joseph Flummerfelt, March 15, 2018.
